Jody Clark – His Life And Works

Dubbed the 21st century equal to William Wyon, Jody Clark has produced some fantastic coinage designs and is the creator of our latest Her Majesty’s Graces Platinum Jubilee sovereign range. Here, we will take a look at his early life and work.

Early Life

Jody Clark was born on the 1st March 1981 in the Lake District, Cumbria. Clark studied illustration at the University of Central Lancashire and began his career designing for the packing industry and other freelance illustration projects. In September 2012, Jody was employed as an engraver for the Royal Mint, which is where he has produced some of his most well-known work. In 2020, Jody left the Royal Mint to become Head of Design for the Commonwealth Mint, undertaking a range of design projects for clients.

Work

Jody Clark uses a mixture of traditional and digital drawing skills to illustrate and develop designs for use on coins, medals, jewellery and much more. Some of his notable designs include the 2014 NATO commemorative medal design, the 2014 Ryder Cup commemorative medal, the 2014 flagship Britannia coin, and the 2016 Queen’s Beasts coins.

In 2015, a competition to design a new portrait of the Queens’ head came up by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee. Jody Clark submitted his design anonymously and it was announced that it had been chosen to become the fifth definitive coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to feature on British coins. This submission made Jody the youngest of five designers who have created the portraits for UK circulating coins during Her Majesty’s then 63-year reign.

Hattons of London

Alongside his incredible work, Jody Clark has also been producing designs exclusively for Hattons of London. He created both the reverse and obverse designs for our 2021 George and the Dragon 200th Anniversary range. He also designed both sides of our 2021 Queen’s 95th Birthday 24 Carat Gold range and is the designer of the portrait of King George VI for our 2022 King George VI Tribute range.

Jody Clark has been inspired by William Wyon for our newest range; the 2022 Her Majesty’s Graces Platinum Jubilee range and has expertly designed both sides of these sovereigns. We look forward to seeing what incredible projects he has upcoming.
