Description

At the coronation ceremony on Saturday 6th of May 2023, we saw not only the crowning of King Charles III but also that of his wife as Queen Camilla. This change to her titles is a sign of the deep affection the king has for the woman who is by his side. Even the coronation of his own mother, Elizabeth II, was almost seventy years ago. The crowning of a new British monarch is an event that most of us will only ever see once.

This new silver crown-sized five pounds commemorative coin is the first of its kind to depict our new king alongside his new queen. The double portrait, by accomplished designer Jody Clark (his initials are beside the portrait), is of a type rarely ever seen on  coinage. Queen Elizabeth II was depicted alongside her husband Prince Philip, but prior to that we need to reach back through time to the reign of William and Mary in the late 1600’s.

Authorised by Tristan Da Cunha  and approved by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Buckingham Palace, it is a wonderful celebration – the first time in history, a silver five pound coin has been minted featuring both the King and Queen.
