Description
The Queen Elizabeth II 2017 Proof Gold Quarter Sovereign was struck to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the British sovereign (1817-2017). The quarter sovereign was struck to the exacting standards as the larger coins in the sovereign family and has the same original George III sovereign design – and because George III didn’t have a quarter sovereign, this coin is the ONLY one ever to feature it. The original design was only ever used on sovereigns for 4 years, plus now this issue.
This is the only time this design has been struck as a Proof and released to collectors. And it was only struck for one year!
The reverse features a remastered version of the St George and the Dragon design. The Benedetto Pistrucci design first appeared on sovereigns in 1817. The 2017 coin features the original garter border, which is the first time it has appeared on sovereigns since 1820.
Only 5,100 were ever struck
