This year marks the 15th anniversary of William and Kate’s engagement, a milestone in their journey together. Their love story is one of resilience, as they have navigated various challenges, including Kate being diagnosed with cancer in March 2024.

In a heartfelt tribute to Kate on her 43rd birthday, Prince William released a statement: “To the most incredible wife and mother. The strength you’ve shown over the last year has been remarkable. George, Charlotte, Louis, and I are so proud of you. Happy Birthday, Catherine. We love you. W.”

Last month, Kate began her gradual return to duties. William and Kate spent a day in Pontypridd, south Wales last week ahead of St. David’s Day on Saturday March 1st. It is their first joint trip to Wales since October 2023, before Kate was diagnosed with cancer.

Their marriage is a modern fairy tale that began with a strong foundation of friendship. Over the years, William and Kate have built a powerful, supportive partnership, with Kate balancing royal duties alongside her own charitable causes such as mental health and early childhood development.

A trace of rare Welsh gold in a gold coin for the Prince & Princess of Wales

To celebrate the Prince & Princess of Wales, a new sovereign has been minted in Matte Proof from 22-carat gold that includes a trace amount of rare Welsh gold in the mixture. Gold sourced from the mines in Wales is highly prized and very rare, with a long and proud association with the Royal Family.

These new Prince & Princess of Wales sovereign coins are of great significance, so here’s a brief snapshot of their most important benefits:

These sovereign coins have incorporated rare Welsh gold in the minting process. Welsh gold is so rare that only tiny quantities are used in the gold mixture when crafting gold items. Although these coins include only a trace amount (less than 1%), it is the fact that Welsh gold is included that is significant.

In a rare occurrence, both sides of the coins have been designed by the same artist, Jody Clark, whose masterful hand has perfectly captured their likenesses.
Only 499 have been isolated from the total limitation and have been Matte Proofed and numbered.

Prince William is the oldest person to be appointed Prince of Wales, at the age of 40. This title has traditionally been bestowed on the male heir apparent of the British monarch since Edward I of England gave his son Edward of Caernarfon the title in 1284. Since 1409, the title has been purely ceremonial. Whilst King Charles III was Invested at a grand ceremony at Caernarfon Castle in 1969, changing times have led the Prince and Princess of Wales to adopt their titles in a more discreet fashion.

These sovereigns feature contemporary portraits of William and Kate, created by Jody Clark, one of the most accomplished coin portrait designers alive today. Clark is revered for his designs, known for their simplicity, refinement, and detailed observation. His world-class portraiture captures the essence of the Prince and Princess at this significant moment in their lives.

Welsh gold – so rare it is usually reserved only for the Royal Family

Welsh gold is so rare that only tiny traces of it can be used in gold items. It has been historically linked to the Royal Family for over a century. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Anne, Diana, Princess of Wales, Catherine, Princess of Wales, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Princess Eugenie all had wedding rings crafted from Welsh gold. This tradition continues, with King Charles also choosing Welsh gold for his wedding band.

With no more Welsh gold being mined in Wales, the gold that remains is highly prized for its purity, colour, and rich heritage. As such, these sovereigns are not just beautiful coins but also a piece of history, marking an important moment in the lives of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Authorised by Tristan Da Cunha and approved by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Buckingham Palace, it is a wonderful tribute – their enduring love story continues to captivate the nation— a true modern fairy tale.
