Description
The death of Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle on 8th September 2022 united the nation in respect for the only monarch the vast majority of us had ever known up until that moment.
As our longest reigning monarch, and the only one in our history ever to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, her place in history is assured.
The late Queen was determined to be a visible monarch – she pioneered the ‘Royal Walkabout’ and as a result, a third of the U.K. population has seen or met her. She toured 117 countries, met 14 U.S. presidents, and counselled 15 British Prime Ministers, beginning with Winston Churchill.
The late Queen pledged her life to the service of her people, and fulfilled that promise right up until the last days before her death at the age of 96.
The gold half sovereign in this set is a lasting tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s greatest monarch.
With the sad passing of one monarch though, a new reign begins, that of her son and heir, King Charles III. He has spent a lifetime in preparation for this historic role. He enters a very different world from that of his mother, and his reign will be inevitably different too.
Heir apparent at three years old, Charles became the oldest person to accede to the British throne upon his mother’s death, aged 73. As Prince of Wales, he founded The Prince’s Trust, the UK’s leading youth charity, and is praised by environmental groups for advocating organic farming and action to prevent climate change. He has a keen interest in all aspects of public life and publicly supports a variety of causes relating to the environment, rural communities, the built environment, the arts, healthcare and education.
With the accession of Charles, a thousand years of Britain’s monarchy continues; an unbroken line of duty, service and tradition.
This set commemorates the changing of Britain’s monarch, from Queen Elizabeth II to King Charles III. The first of the two coins in this set was released in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II following her death in September 2022.
The second coin in this set is in commemoration of the accession of King Charles III and features his new cypher, the crowned ‘CR III’. This set also illustrates that, in keeping with centuries of tradition, Charles faces the opposite direction to his mother.
