Britain changed to decimal currency in 1971. To celebrate the Silver Anniversary of that change the Royal Mint released its first ever silver proof set – the Queen Elizabeth II Proof Quality Coin Set of 1996. Comprised of the regular circulating coins of 1996, but struck to the highest Proof standards, each and every coin was struck in sterling silver. Just 15,000 sets were released.
At Hattons of London we think the Queen Elizabeth II Proof Quality Coin Set in Silver of 1996 is a set that is underestimated by many today: not only does it celebrate a very important coinage milestone it is also a very important ‘first’ in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, and her reign is one of the most significant in British history.
