To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day – The 2020 VE Day 75th Anniversary Gold Sovereign with a white rhodium-platinum finish, celebrating the peace brought by VE Day.
This year we mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, that incredible moment when peace returned to Britain, and the rest of Europe, after six dark years of war. On this day Churchill proclaimed on the radio that hostilities had ended, church bells rang out, and people spilled onto the streets in a spontaneous show of joy and celebration. The mood of relief grew through the day, as did the crowds, and carried on into the night: the revellers even included two incognito Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret! VE Day – the 8th of May 1945 – was one of those truly momentous days in our history.
It’s a sad fact that there are few alive today who experienced that momentous day. This year’s 75th commemoration may well be the last occasion on which veterans will be among those who mark Victory in Europe, making it more important than ever that we make this a lasting commemoration. That’s why, as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of VE Day, some exceptional gold coins have been minted: The 2020 VE Day 75th Anniversary Gold Sovereign – the first sovereigns produced with a rhodium-platinum finish, resulting in a white appearance celebrating the peace brought about by VE Day.
The British Royal Family played a central role in the VE Day celebrations, and this new sovereign depicts the joyful moment when they shared the nation’s euphoria and pride as they waved from the iconic Buckingham Palace balcony to the vast crowns assembled on The Mall.
First sovereign produced with a rhodium-platinum finish
The sovereign released for the 75th anniversary of VE Day is finished with rhodium-platinum, creating a white appearance symbolic of the peace of VE Day. Rhodium is one of the world’s most valuable precious metals, and the rarest of the six metals in the platinum family, which in February this year reached a price of US$10,000 an ounce! This is the first time that a new sovereign coin has been produced with a rhodium-platinum finish.
The incredibly high price of rhodium-platinum means it is rarely used for anything for which there is an alternative. For example, it would have been possible to apply other, less expensive metals to these coins to achieve a similar white finish – silver, for example, would have done the job. However, to ensure these coins are as special as possible, and unlikely to ever be matched, they have been finished with rhodium-platinum!
This sovereign coin is a world first and at around $10,000-an-ounce for rhodium-platinum, it’s easy to understand why!
This sovereign is a world’s first
This is an exciting first opportunity for collectors to obtain the sovereign for their collection – these could well become the most sought-after sovereign coins of all time. However, the mintage has been restricted to just 2,020 coins. Authorised by Alderney, and approved by both the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Buckingham Palace, it is a wonderful celebration – and a world first one at that – of peace brought by VE Day.
Benefit from the SELL OUT GUARANTEE
The 2020 VE Day 75th Anniversary Gold Sovereign is limited to just 2,020 coins, but this is subject to our new SELL OUT GUARANTEE. What this means is that availability of this coin will end on 31st August 2020. At that time, any coins that are unsold will be melted down and verified to that effect.
At that point, we will issue to owners of this coin a new certificate stating the final mintage which may be lower, or possibly considerably lower, than 2,020. If the mintage remains at 2,020 then this means the coins sold out entirely to keen customers, and if not you may have secured for yourself a low mintage rarity.
Either way, there will be little or no surplus of this coin on the secondary market and so the coin you own will be a rarity!
